Tampon Myths

Although tampons have been used as a method of trusted period protection for decades, there are still many myths and misconceptions about them. Playtex® has been manufacturing tampons since the 1960s, so we consider ourselves subject matter experts. We’re here to set the record straight on some of the most common questions we hear.

Q: Can a tampon be pushed too far inside my body?
A: No. The opening at the end of the vagina, the cervix, is too small to allow a tampon to pass through. It physically cannot happen.

Q: Can a tampon "float away" or get lost inside my body?
A: No. In addition to the cervix being too small, the walls of the vagina hold the tampon in place. The tampon will stay put until you take it out.

Q: Can I wear my Playtex® tampon overnight?
A: Yes. You can wear a tampon for up to 8 hours, day or night, but you should change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours and use the lowest absorbency needed to reduce the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Learn more about TSS here.

Q: Can I wear a tampon for swimming, working out or playing sports?
A: Yes! Our tampons are designed to move with your body and keep you leak-free. They’re also perfect for swimming and other activities you wouldn’t be able to do in a pad.

Q: The first time I tried using a tampon, it was uncomfortable for me. And when I tried taking it out, it hurt. Am I someone who can’t use tampons?
A: No. Sometimes tampons are inserted incorrectly (usually they’re not in far enough) and they can feel uncomfortable. The fact that it hurt when you pulled it out is because tampons are designed to expand in your body. When you pull out a dry tampon that’s only been in your vagina a short time, it can be uncomfortable. Next time, give the tampon a chance to absorb some of your menstrual flow. Check out our step-by-step instructions on how to insert a tampon here.

If you’re noticing that upon removal, your tampons are dry even after wearing for 4-8 hours, try going down in absorbency (for example, moving from Super to Regular) or use a Stayfree® pad or Carefree® liner.

Q: Is it safe to flush my tampon?
A: No. It is not safe to flush tampons. They will damage septic systems. Tampons do not break down once they are submerged in water -- they are made to do the exact opposite. Tampons will not clog the toilet right away, but repeatedly flushing them will build up in plumbing over time. The proper way to discard a used tampon is to wrap it in toilet paper and throw it away in a waste receptacle.

Q: Will using a tampon cause me to lose my virginity?
A: No. You don't have to worry about losing your virginity when using a tampon. You will remain a virgin until you have sexual intercourse.
